Competitive archery is rewarding and lots of fun, but as you gain experience you’ll want to do more than just participate. In the words of NFL coach Herm Edwards, “You play to win the game.”

If you’ve set your sights on winning a tournament, you must master the sport’s physical and mental demands. Then you must gain experience by practicing those elements in competition. After that, you could be on your way to the podium and a gold medal.

Led by World Archery, the international governing body of competitive archery, the seemingly simple sport of firing arrows at a target has grown to become the complex activity that it is today.Undertaken by highly-skilled professionals battling it out on the world stage, archery competitions are usually classified into eight different age and gender groups. I am hosting another game pigeon tournament this Saturday, at 12:00 PM PT. The game mode this time is going to be cup pong. Dm me your # and venmo username ( if you wanna win money 😏 ). If you DO want to win money, you have to give five dollars to the pool. If you don’t give any money, that’s fine.

Winning Form

Once you have a repeatable form, practice it until it becomes part of your subconscious. After a few thousands repetitions, your shot will feel as natural as walking. Photo Credit: USA Archery

Good shooting requires consistency, and that starts with your form, which is the process of shooting your bow naturally shot after shot. Classic archery form combines good posture and body mechanics with a consistent grip, stance and anchor point. No two bodies are alike, so it’s important to work with a coach to find the form that works best for your body. Once you’ve achieved a repeatable form, practice until it’s part of your subconscious. A Mental Game Plan

A strong mental game is important because it gives you the ability to execute your good form when it counts. Photo Credit: USA Archery

Great form takes you far, but the best archers also excel at archery’s mental game. If you shoot great in practice but not as well on league nights or in other competitions, your form isn’t the culprit. Your mental game needs work. The key is to shoot like you’re not trying to win. Lean on mental strategies to bring home the gold.

A strong mental game helps you execute your good form when it counts. Much like your form, your mental strategy must match your personality. Instructors can help you develop a strategy, as can books like “With Winning in Mind” by Lanny Bassam, and “Archery: Think and Shoot Like a Champion,” by Terry Wunderle.

One mental game plan is to repeat a positive phrase while you shoot. This keeps you focused and stifles negative thoughts. Another strategy is a form checklist, which ensures you complete all the necessary steps to make each shot good. Once you find a mental strategy that works well, use it every time you shoot, especially in competitions.

Practicing for Competition

If you can’t get to more competitions, you can replicate the experience in practice. Mimic the aspects of competition like scoring, a shot clock and shooting around people. Photo Credit: USA Archery

The best way to practice for competition is to shoot in every tournament possible. The more you shoot in pressure situations, the easier it becomes. Before you know it, competition feels much like practice.

If you can’t compete more often, you can replicate competition in practice. Use a shot clock, shoot with people around you, and score each round before pulling your arrows. You can even add pressure on yourself by placing fun wagers with friends. The more realistic your practice sessions, the better you’ll shoot in competition.

Winning at archery isn’t easy. It takes the right skills and lots of hard work to compete effectively. If you’re ready to get serious about archery, find a coach at the archery shop and clear your schedule for lots of disciplined practice.

Game Play

Archery Tag® is played similarly to dodgeball, but you are equipped with a bow and specially designed foam-tipped arrows. Two teams, consisting of 5 players each playing opposite one another, are separated by a “safe zone.” Each team also has what we call a “5-Spot Knockout Target.” There are two objectives: 1) to hit the opponents, and 2) to knock out the five discs of the opposing team’s target. You eliminate a player by hitting him or her with an arrow, or by catching his or her arrow. The 5-Spot Targets work to save a “life” of one of the players. A “hit” player can be called back into the game when a target spot is knocked out or when a teammate catches an arrow. Unlike some other sports, the only safety equipment required to play Archery Tag® is a facemask.

Game Types

There are many different types of Archery Tag games you can play, and we are constantly inventing new ones to add a new element of fun and surprise. Here are a few that we tend to play on a consistent basis.

Regular

In a normal game of Archery Tag, the objective is to tag all players on the opposing team. Whether you are going to be strategic and patient or strike with an all-out attack is up to you. When a player is tagged, they must walk to the sidelines with a hand in the air. They may return to the game if a player from their team hits a target on the opposing teams target stand. A team wins if either all players on the opposing team are eliminated, or all targets in the target stand are shot out.

Revival

For a game of Revival Archery Tag, each team secretly selects one player on their team to be the ‘doctor’. Throughout the game, instead of going to the sidelines when players are tagged, players have a seat directly where they are tagged. The ‘doctor’ can go around and ‘revive’ downed player, bringing them back into the game. The game continues as long as the ‘doctor’ is still alive. Once the ‘doctor’ is tagged, the opposing team must tag all the remaining players to win the game.

Free-For-All

Free-for-all is similar to how it sounds. There are no teams and each player must fend for themselves. The only thing is that you can not tag players that are on the same side of the safe zone as you. This is a great way to determine who the champion archer is of all the participants!

Juggernaut

At the beginning of a Juggernaut game, each team is given a shield. The shield must be given to a player on the team who won’t be able to use a bow for the duration of this game. The ‘juggernaut’ can use the shield to defend teammates from oncoming arrows. Once the juggernaut is tagged, they are out for the game and can not hand off the shield to their teammates. The objective in a juggernaut game is to tag each player on the opposing team, including the juggernaut.

Safety

Players must wear safety mask when a game is in session to protect their face and eyes. Other than that, the foam-tipped arrows are cushioned enough that no other safety equipment is needed and players experience no pain when “hit” with our Archery Tag®arrows. To ensure the safety of our players, we only use authentic equipment purchased from Global Archery Products Inc., located in Indiana, USA.
